Detection of Contact Binaries Using Sparse High Phase Angle Lightcurves
نویسنده
چکیده
We show that candidate contact binary asteroids can be efficiently identified from sparsely sampled photometry taken at phase angles α > 60◦. At high phase angle, close/contact binary systems produce distinctive lightcurves that spend most of the time at maximum or minimum (typically >1mag apart) brightness with relatively fast transitions between the two. This means that a few (∼5) sparse observations will suffice to measure the large range of variation and identify candidate contact binary systems. This finding can be used in the context of all-sky surveys to constrain the fraction of contact binary near-Earth objects. High phase angle lightcurve data can also reveal the absolute sense of the spin. Subject headings: minor planets, asteroids — solar system: general — techniques: photometric

Fraction of Contact Binary Trojan Asteroids
We present the results of an optical lightcurve survey of 114 Jovian Trojan asteroids conducted to determine the fraction of contact binaries. Sparse-sampling was used to assess the photometric range of the asteroids and those showing the largest ranges were targeted for detailed follow-up observations. This survey led to the discovery of two Trojan asteroids, (17365) and (29314) displaying lar...
متن کاملTraffic Scene Analysis using Hierarchical Sparse Topical Coding
Analyzing motion patterns in traffic videos can be exploited directly to generate high-level descriptions of the video contents. Such descriptions may further be employed in different traffic applications such as traffic phase detection and abnormal event detection. One of the most recent and successful unsupervised methods for complex traffic scene analysis is based on topic models. In this pa...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملRice Classification and Quality Detection Based on Sparse Coding Technique
Classification of various rice types and determination of its quality is a major issue in the scientific and commercial fields associated with modern agriculture. In recent years, various image processing techniques are used to identify different types of agricultural products. There are also various color and texture-based features in order to achieve the desired results in this area. In this ...
متن کاملDyVSoR: dynamic malware detection based on extracting patterns from value sets of registers
To control the exponential growth of malware files, security analysts pursue dynamic approaches that automatically identify and analyze malicious software samples. Obfuscation and polymorphism employed by malwares make it difficult for signature-based systems to detect sophisticated malware files. The dynamic analysis or run-time behavior provides a better technique to identify the threat. In t...
